Aircraft where the instruments to set notable records, raging wars, but above all: they increased our mobility. All of these planes, in one way or another, changed our world.
But where are the historic examples now ? Many of us know that Lindbergh's Spirit of Saint Louis found a definitive place in the National Air and Space Museum (Washington DC). But where to find Blériot's kite in which he crossed the Channel in 1909 ? What might be considered as the most original Spitfire ? How many original Fokkers survived WW 1 ? Combining two other passions, photography and heritage, I (re)visited historic collections in museums and workshops all over the world in order to draw up a list of surviving aircraft with a particular historic importance. Please note: this is a labour of love, in progress. The situation and location of historic aircraft changes often: museums close, some planes are swapped, in restoration, or just crash... to be rebuild again. This site intends to be a guide for the aviation enthousiast - please check for yourself (see sources) before taking the plane to look for a particular aviation treasure. |
