Sopwith Triplane

The prototype appeared in May 1916 and was found to be highly manoeuvrable with a phenomenal rate of climb. 147 built, two examples left.
  • N5486 was supplied to the Russian Government for evaluation in May 1917. The aircraft was fitted with skis and used operationally until captured by the Bolshevist. It then served in the Red Air Force, probably as a trainer, and was rebuilt many times. Now at the Aviation Museum, Monino, Moscow.
  • N5912, on display at the RAF Museum Hendon. Documents indicate that the brand-new plane was at Hendon from 19 October 1917 until 21 February 1918, so it never saw combat. During the mid-sixties, with an initial intention to restore to flying condition, all wooden parts were renewed - only metal parts retained.
