Cierva C.30

The autogiro, designed by Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva, is a type which uses an unpowered rotor in autorotation to develop lift, and an engine-powered propeller to provide thrust. The most succesful autogyro, the Cierva C.30, was built under licence from the UK-based Cierva Autogiro Company by A V Roe & Co Ltd (Avro - UK), Lioré-et-Olivier (France) and Focke-Wulf (Germany).
C.30s in use of the RAF were known as Rota's.

Of the about 140 built (by all factories), there are 10 known survivors:
  • Avro Rota Mk I K4232 on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon, England. (see photo)
  • Avro Rota Mk I K4235 on display at Fantasy of Flight, Polk City, Florida. (see photo)
  • Avro Rota Mk I AP506 (wreck) on display at the Helicopter Museum, Weston-super-Mare, England.
  • Avro Rota Mk I AP507 on display at the Science Museum in London, England. (see photo)
  • Avro Rota Mk I HM580, former G-ACUU, on display at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, England. It joined Air Service Training Ltd in 1934, serving with 529 Squadron during WW2 and returning to civil use, finally to be withdrawn in 1960. (see photo)
  • Leo/SNCA C-302 F-BDAD on display at the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace, Paris. (see photos)
  • Cierva C.30A LV-FBL on display in Argentina.
  • Cierva C.30A VH-USR on display at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.
  • Cierva C.30 I-CIER on display at the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia "Leonardo da Vinci", Milan, Italy.
  • Cierva C.30A SE-AFI on display at the Aviodrome, the Netherlands.
