Cierva C.30
The autogiro, designed by Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva, is a type which uses an unpowered rotor in autorotation to develop lift, and an engine-powered propeller to provide thrust. The most succesful autogyro, the Cierva C.30, was built under licence from the UK-based Cierva Autogiro Company by A V Roe & Co Ltd (Avro - UK), Lioré-et-Olivier (France) and Focke-Wulf (Germany).
C.30s in use of the RAF were known as Rota's. Of the about 140 built (by all factories), there are 10 known survivors:
